Needs some help please. Broke the E26 Mast on New Years Eve. Inner shroud gave way and the mast buckled in the nor-easter taking the Roller reefing on the Genoa with it.

Now in middish April I am still without a Mast. Local sailmaker said go to Sheerline in Manly (I am on Jervis Bay) so I took the mast up to Sydney. Quote was $12,000 more than the boat is worth. The marine assessor and insurer have an agreed value of $5,500 leaving me some $6,500 short. I cant afford this gap so I am mastless.
I am a novice at dealing with insurance companies assessors and repairers So any help would be great. Can I go to another spar maker? Does the assessor dictate where I go? He seems to hold the money

Thanks Trevor Smith

Hi there Trevor,
Bad luck about the mast. Sheerline are just down the road from where I live in Sydney and from experience we have found that they are overly expensive. So.... suggest that you get on the net and shop around and get quotes from alternative suppliers. I've found that Spunspar at Mona Vale are more than reasonable and have purchased two spinnaker poles from them in the last year.
Talk with Colin Cole and get his advice.
Good luck, Chris.

Hi Trevor. I stepped a new mast in late 2008 just before the Belmont Nats. The mast was a standard blank supplied with speader bases fitted from Whale spars. Cost delivered was $950.00. I rigged it myself with new stays and turnbuckles for under $2000.00. I dont know if insurance companies would allow this but it would be heaps cheaper and there are many ways to save money. For example there is a company up here in Newcastle called Speciallized Wholesale who sell marine fittings for the construction industry. I got 6 turnbuckles for $39 each, normally about $140 each. Its all standard Ronstan fittings but sold as construction it doesnt draw the luxury tax that marine fittings do. Just make sure you check breaking strains compared to those from the marine shops as there are the cheap versions which are not up to the task. Im sure there are similar shops down your way. Cheers Gav Crowley.

Hi Trevor,
I can highly recommend David Rooke of Roospar gosford.
He recently rerigged my Young 88 and also rerigged Trekka an E26 at LMYC. Some years ago he did Eric Hodgins E26 at Gosford.
As Gavin mentions there are ways to save, a cheaper mast section may be one. I am sure that David would be able to advise you accordingly.
