Hi there Colin, yes I've spoken with the local shipwright and he suggested that the cause of our problem may be electrolysis. We had a problem with the anodes on our keel and sorted that out two years ago. So we will look at it again when she is up on the slips this coming winter. With regards to your problem Eric, well a lot has to do with how you have treated yourself when younger. Now all you can do is add preservative of the liquid type in measured amounts. Just enough to preserve the bones and keep the arteries clear, but not too much so that you kill off too many brain cells, although that may not be applicable to your good self. Anyway, I'm off to visit the good ship Hagar to make sure that she did not sink overnight. Chris. Chris. |

Oh yes Eric, I forgot to mention the fact that both of my grandmothers lived to be quite old. One was 86 and the other 98 when they cast off. And both had a liking for scotch and the older one also too to drinking sherry in he last few years. She had no memory loss but was as deaf as a post and quiet opinionated and very loud, didn't we know. Chris. |

Hi there Taunto and welcome to the Endeavour circus. Don't you take too much notice of young Eric, he is a bit painful at times but really is just a naughty little boy. Dontweknow!? With regards to skin fittings, well I'm about to reverse all the wisdom been directed by some and go back to bronze. PVC is a no-no, too soft and brittle and will suffer from UV if above the water line. We have been progressively removing our below water skin fittings on our Mark 1 E30, and there are a handful of them. We replaced the largest one first two years ago, the toilet outlet which was bronze and original. The turning tap had seized. At that time we installed a set of Stainless steel skin and internal SS leaver tap fitting which was a cast SS and with an inner SS ball. This had seized up and we replaced it this week with SS again. It looks like the SS insides have rusted. I'm about to go out and look for Bronze replacement set-up but this can only be properly replaced on the slips. When we replaced the salt water engine cooling skin fitting at the last slipping our Engineer insisted that we use bronze. Colin Cole and others have suggested that the SS will rust due to electrolysis, so Bronze seems to be the safest option. Hope that helps, but if you are racing then throw the lot away and seal all the holes. Chris. |

Hi there Col....how did you go with the new rudder/shaft? You'll be happy to know Princeton is not the only 24 with wood screws securing the genoa tracks. We returned Mia with both tracks looking like the harbour bridge and recommended to Michael he consider ss bolts. Cheers Rob |

Hi Rob hope all is well in the west - and the loverly girls are fine too I trust! Yes SS shaft fitted for the trip home - 10.5 hours - 13.6 knots fastest speed - wonderful - only wish it had stayed together for the last day off the regatta as I believe we had thier measure (that should get the keyboards active) Might have to step up to nuts n bolts if gal tech screws keep failing :)
Take care all you westies it was a better weekend for you participation.

Thanks Col, yep all fine over here, brilliant day of 30C with a 20kt Doctor for the race, couldn't be better. Should be a six can ride. I'm happy to say the highlight of my trip off the water was sampling the Sydney rock oysters four times at the Gunyah Pub just to make sure the first lot wasn't a one off. They taste much better over there.....yummy. Very good food there for a great price, and great staff too. The dunny ankle deep in water and sorbent was a bit of a challenge however. Eric if it's all right with you I'd prefer not to LOVE Copey......is that ok?? Cheers Rob |

On Friday evening we found that the Hagar had a lot of water in the bilge. In recent months following the installation of the stern gland she has been mainly water tight when on the mooring and only leaks after heavy rain and if sailing in heavy conditions. We now find that since last weeks work on the toilet outlet fittings she is filling the bilge and then emptying via the automatic bilge pump. Close examination of the inside area of the toilet skin fitting has revealed that it has a slow weeping leak. Does anyone know if Stikaflex can be applied to wet surfaces and is there an alternative. There is no doubt that Hagar should go up on the slips and have the skin fitting removed, cleaned and re-installed. However we would like to avoid this cost. Chris. |

prudent boatownership would dictate that you fella's let a few moths out of youe wallets n do the right thing! BUT first - try that sellies cleaar all purpose silicon - the advertise it for wet application on down pipe etc - u may throw Rod over the side and see if you can get a film around the outside of the skin fitting too - worth a try. |

Thanks for your advise Col And Stuart. However it will be Copey who will be getting wet as I'm the underwater operator aboard the Hagar. Skipper Childs is feeling a little poorly at present with a case of shagers back. Says that he pulled a muscle while excavating under his house. What I've learnt from this little mess is that if you try and move the tap fitting you inevitably break the skin fitting seal which really means a slip job. Although we will try the silicon suggested. In hindsight we should have just drained the pipe and hosed it all out. And banned the use of the WC until after the next slipping when we could fit it properly. The good news is that the boat was dry after yesterdays race and we will check her out again today as we are going down to North Harbour to celebrate Australia Day, although the labour pollies would like us to be celebrating indigenous day. Chris. |
