Last week Rod and I took out a Marine Surveyor to assess the damage and he approved the claim and has instructed us to go ahead with the repairs. This will be sometime in the winter months as our choice of repairers cannot do the job for at least two months. This is OK as the boat will not sink and we will be able to do the normal winter jobs when she is up on the slips. We may also replace the old windows this time around.
Of interest were the comments by the Surveyor, who is well known to myself though the Fruit & Vegetable trade where I work and he sometimes conducts surveys on Fruits & Vegetables which come in damaged. He normally represents the Shipping Companies.
He stated, after being told the facts about the collision that were were probably 90% in the right and 10% in the wrong and that the division of liability would be divided that way.

Chris, You want to increase the size of your fleet ,so try this..As the 30s dont apparently have and rules or measurements ,why not just enlist any of the older 30ftrs around the harbour and call them E30s ,who can argue ??????good idea dont we know ...EH

Yes Eric,
Well we have contemplated this type of thing in the past, that is to have a 30 footer regatta. However we are not in the business in promoting other classes and if we were really into faster 30's then we would get a 30 foot sports boat or a Mumm 30. Remember that Rod and the two other owners of the Hagar are ex E26 owners who have just grown up dontyouknow? It was I who made the move towards buying an E30, because they looked good and had enough size to both party as well as sleep on when we went camping or regattaering. And in addition the bys were tired of winning all the time in the E26's, as you know.
This long weekend Rod and I were contemplating going for a short overnight sail up to Pittwater and have a night at the RMYC there. However the weather is looking somewhat inclement and we will instead be replacing the speakers in the cockpit on Saturday as well as possibly going for a run and experimenting with the new/old single luff kite.

There has not been any activity to report on the Hagar since our final race of the season and our Middle Harbour shipwright and slip owner is away in Queensland playing on boats. We have had the green light to proceed with the gunnel and hull damage from our accident from the Insurance surveyor but are willing to wait until winter and do a lot more on the boat when she is up for a couple of weeks. We intend to replace the old crazed windows with the tinted stuff as well as replacing the leaking toilet skin fitting with bronze, the usual sanding of and repainting of the underwater hull and the cleaning and polishing of the hull sides. We may also re-paint the top sides.
Lots of fun, dontweknow?

There is not a lot of news from the Hagar crew or the North Harbour SC. Today Rod and I attended a very large funeral for John Bombardier with most of the Manly Warringah Italian community being in attendance. We will miss John as he was a good Club man.
This Sunday we are planning to do some work on the Hagar with a number of cleaning jobs, including hull rub marks and rust stains. We will also decide which jobs should be prioritised for the June or July slipping.

Do not know Eric, will look on the laptop at home from where I posted yesterday's comments on the Hagar. Maybe that the date is incorrect on that computer. Have checked this one at work and the date is correctly set.
Last night I went out onto our deck to feed the two dogs and found our young Great Dane having a possum snack. He had caught and dismembered a big bushy and was munching away happily until I took it off him and buried the carcass.

Congratulations! Two birds with one stone – one less possum and a healthy meal for your Great Dane.
Speaking of birds, have you thought of using him as a scarecrow on Hagar?

Late on Sunday Rod and I went out to the Hagar to check her out and do a little bit of work. It was pleasing to find that even with all the rain falls she has had the insides including the bilge were all dry! This is a good result for all of the work we have been doing for some time on fixing leaks, but mainly the installation of the drip less stern gland last year.
We replaced the cockpit speakers and ran the engine to charge up the batteries.
Work on the crushed port side gunnel will not take place until June or July and the gunnel alloy tubing cannot be sourced and replaced so we are now looking at installing a stainless steel insert.

We are looking for one small winch to replace the cabin mounted starboard winch on the Hagar which is busted. Any leads?

Well, there is really no news from the Hagar boys with Andy and Ian off cruising the Adriatic Sea for the second winter. Rod took the Hagar for a motor on Saturday and she was dry and the motor went straightaway and everything is fine. The Insurance company has approved the work to be performed on the port side gunnel and now we are awaiting the slips and tradesman to be available. The way it is shaping up it may not be until August.

Rod has organised the Hagar to be motored around to Middle Harbour and for the damaged port gunnel to be started on Monday morning. So this Saturday afternoon we went down and cleaned everything out of the boat in preparation to ensure that all of the boat gear will not be contaminated with fibreglass dust. The slipping however may not take place at this stage as the boat will not be out of the water at this time. Bummer! The boat is going really well and the engine started straight away and I replaced and tightened up the bolts which hold the propeller bush before the shaft enters the aft rubber pipe. We have been having a great deal of shuddering of the prop shaft since we installed the drip-less stern gland.

It was mission accomplished this morning as Rod and Pete motored the Hagar around to Middle Harbour and delivered her to the shipwright for the work to be completed on the gunnel. I addition he will look at putting in a buffet bench and opening up the cabin a bit more so that it is more user friendly. There are also some minor stainless protection fittings to be made up. It should take about a week, we hope.

Hi there David,
The work on our boat is being done by Tim of Wunderlich Marine. He is located second from the Spit bridge and has the only slipway there. The other is a scissor lift marina. We are having some insurance damage work done as well as some upgrading of the inside as well as some stainless protection made up.

Late yesterday afternoon Rod, Andy & myself went down to the Spit Marina, on the eastern side to check out the work in progress taking place on the Hagar. It was most interesting in that the whole wharf configuration has changed and Tim has lost the use of the small slipway on which we have slipped the Hagar over the past three years. Tim has now a relationship with the sizer-lift marina next door, However we still have to find out how much it will cost.
The Hagar was out on the northeastern arm in the water. The smashed section of glass on the port side has been replaced as well as all the inside underlying skin in the cabin removed. He is currently gel coating the outside. He has also cut out the starboard side bunk supports where a new buffet is to be installed.

There is no news from the Hagar with the work hopefully scheduled to be finished this coming Friday when Andy & I are to pick her up and return her to North Harbour. Rod has gone skiing with his family this week and will be back next weekend. So the annual slipping is still to be organised and undertaken.

Spoke with the boat repairer, and the Hagar will be ready to be picked up and motored back tomorrow afternoon. So Andy and I will get to see how the work went as well as see how the breakfast bar went.

Hi Pat,
Can do on the story for preparing for the Nationals. While we may make a lot of plans not everything is achieved or put into place. However the past three seasons has seen enough done to get the results. We have been on a re-build and learning curve for the past four and a half years that we have had our E30.
Will try and put together a short story, how long or short should it be?
Chris.
