Well while I've been off racing at the CYC in the Marloo the Hagar and North Harbour SC have been well. We all survived last weeks storms without any looses. There was the odd dinghy which was swept away in last weeks big blow. Rod went out to the Hagar yesterday and found her dry and the engine started first go and he tooker for a steam around the bay at Manly. She has a lot of slime and most likely some weed and will be going up on the slips for her annual cleaning in July or August. There will be a long list of things to do to her and we are looking at attaching the staunchions to comply with Cat 4. The main job will be to replace the four windows which are badly crazed and the outer sealant is mostly peeled off.

Yesterday saw Rod, Andy & myself bring the Hagar into the marina workberth where we got to and conducted some overdue maintenence. I installed two fastening fittings for the engine cover. This is a Cat 4 requirement. Andy and I then replaced the oil and oil filter to the engine.
Rods sanded off all the outside timbers and applied one coat of feast watson varnish.
We will do more in the coming weeks and Hagar is to go up on the hard stand sometime in August for her annual outer hull maintenence.
The Hagar diesel engine is running well and the boat is dry in the bilge and sump.

We are planning to work again on the Hagar at the North Harbour Marins, weather permitting on Sunday. We still have to "fix" the staunchins to the hull for Cat 4 with just about everything else up to speed. We are planning to race in the offshore series this coming season with the first race out of the Amateurs in September. This race is up to Lion Island and back to Sydney.
We now have confirmed that the Hagar is booked into the Middle Harbour hard stand marina in the first weekend of August for her annual clean-up.

Yesterday saw the Hagar boys put in a big day's work on her as she sits on the hard stand at Middle Harbour next to the bridge on the eastern side. She went up on Friday afternoon and we found the bottom to be in probably the best condition in the six years that we have had her and been doing the anti-foul work ourselves.
Last year we ground back the iron keel and put two coats of an industrial primer undercoat. This was an Altek product and we followed this with three coats of the soft Altek antifouling paint. This year there were no rust spots and she had only slime and the odd barnacle on the bottom of the keel where she had been sitting on timbers and had not been ground and treated. We cannot give high enough praise to the Altek products. They work!
We scraped sanded the undersides down and applied to coats of primer and one coat of antifouling late in the day. Rod and Ian cleaned and silicon polished the sides while Old-Pete was busy servicing the winches and fixing the halliards with splicing and end for ending the main halyard which was frayed.
Today will see two more coats of antifouling applied and with a lot of minor jobs to the top-sides.

We had finished working on the by 3pm. It was a great weekend weather wise with and yesterday saw another two and three coats of anti foul applied to the leading edges. The weather was so good that the paint was drying very quickly. We also sanded back, masked and repainted the top blue and above waterline red stripes which came up well. We have not repainted the stripes since we bought her.
It was an education to watch Old-Pete disassemble the two primary winches and then clean them out with petrol. He did this with a small brush in a SS bowel. He then re-greased all the cogs and bearings and oiled the clips and springs. Then he re-assembled them and re-installed and checked that they worked on the boat. We still need to do the two cabin top winches. Especially the port side one which is for the main and jib halliards.
Andy disassembled the engine mountings and has decided to replace the two aft mounts. The port side one have a cracked rubber. He has also decided to install a rubber dampener where the prop shaft is attached to the engine. While this is not a main concern it will reduce shudder and vibrations. He also wants to change the floorboard configuration around the engine to give easier access to the oil filter as well as the starboard side of the motor which is currently a nightmare to service.
We finished around 4.30pm after packing and cleaning up.

Hagar is now back on her mooring in North Harbour with Rod & Pete having motoring her back this morning.
We now have a few minor jobs to complete to achieve Cat 4 again and we will be ready for the Lion Island and return race in September.
Our Club AGM is on Next Saturday with most of the incumbent admistrators most likely to be returned to their current positions. Of major interst will be the voting for the new Constitution for Limited Liability, like the one which we voted for up at Gosford during the 2012 Nationals. Our Club is controlled by the "registerd boat owners". This means that only financial members who have a registered racing yacht with the Club can have a vote to change the Constitution.
Of major concern is one of the Club Objectives which states that the club will "encourage social intercourse", which if course some members have taken to heart and have forfilled to the max in the hollowed hall, don't we know?. More than likely this will be retained while some of the softies take unbridge.

Hi there Justin,

Rod took some phone photos as she came out of the water before she was gurnied down. I took a couple of shots after she had dried off. Did not take my camera down again during the next two days. A pity because I should have documented Pete as he serviced the two main winches.
We still have the other two smaller decktop winches to service and hopefully will remember to do it then.
We are now looking at purchasing a battery powered diving kit so that we can clean our own boat on her mooring.

Regards,
Chris.

Hagar is looking really good for the coming season and Rod & myself will be working upon her this weekend. At this stage there are two working lists.
Firstly there is the long term, want-to-do list which includes a complete re-paint of the topsides, including the decks and the sides. When we do this she will require to be completely sanded back and after painting we will install new windows and replace the original old crazed four. All of this will require time and must be done in the off season. So hopefully next winter if Col can squeeze her in he has a job.
More immediately there are the normal safety and maintenance work which we are undertaking. These include;
1. Collecting the stanchions from the SS welder and installing them with the safety lines for Cat 4.
2. I also have to finish, paint and install the new cabin lock-up system for Cat 4. This should see a finish for our Cat 4 Certification.
3. I have to finish sanding and fitting the new floor board against the engine.
4. We will be installing new carpet in the cabin floor to prevent any slipping.
5. We are also looking at making up a big sock to cover the bottom of the mast so that we can fix the baby stay to the mast base and to prevent the jib catching and tearing when we tack. The Baby Stay is a major impediment to us when tacking during races.
6. Pete has to service the two cabin top winches.
So that is about it for the moment.
Chris.

Yesterday saw Rod and I down at North Harbour again working on the Hagar to finish off all the loose ends to satisfy the Cat 4 safety requirements. And so Rod will enter us in the Sydney to Lion Island and return race for next Saturday. We are hopeful of recruiting a crew for the race which has been made difficult with half of the owners away and Old Pete racing on the Jarken 42, Marloo in the same race.
The next day, Sunday, is the opening race of the racing season at North Harbour so we have it all ahead of us. I only hope that skipper Childs will be recovered from the flu which has laid him low and irritable for the past few days.
Hagar is looking really good and I have been trying to work out how old she is. She should be 40 years old in either 2013 or 2014.

Good morning Chris , Hagar,s age,interesting question .
I was trying to work out Dulcibella's age the other day when it came to mind that there is not a serial number embossed in the glass somewhere in the hull as was the case in the E26 that i used to own , Does the mighty Hagar have a number apart from her boat coad, stamped into her hull .I thought i had read in some of Dulcibella papers that she was born in 1974, but i cant find that referance anymore, is there any other way one could find out or is all that information past and gone.
Cheers tony

Hi there Tony,
The Hagar has no marks to identify her manufacture number or year of build which is dissapointing. However from the documents from her sale to us she is listed as being built in 1974. I only found this out a couple of days ago when going though all the photos and data on E30's in my work computer. The sistership, Splinter which is owned by Kevin Swadling, was builts in 1973. So Hagar will be 40 years old in 2014. So I must do some investigation and find out what type of flags we can fly when she turns 40.
Unfortunatly we have had to pull out of the short offshore race today with the Ameutures. Rod has developed a bloood infection and was rushed into the RNSH and is now sitting up with with lots of new plumbing. It seems that this infection came after he had a biopsey the previous friday while in hospital.
So we have revised our Clubs opening race to the 23rd of September 2012. I'm glad we are not racing today as I had a wisdom tooth pulled on Thursday and it is still giving me grief.
It is a shame that all this has happened as it is going to be a nice westerly breeze today which will make the race a quicky. We have spent a lot of hours getting the old girl up to Cat 4 safety.

Grumble, grumble toil and trouble,
Ah yes it's the venerable old man from the Gosford swamp, dont we know? Eric you old crustation!
At least these old men are still kicking and sailing.
Yesterday I sailed aboard the Marloo in the Ransa race on Sydney Harbour which and are currently leading the Division One fleet. At almost 60 years young I'm the youngest regular sailing aboard Marloo with the Skipper at 82, Navigator 86 and most of the rest in their 70's. I get called back from the bow when it is really fresh to tighten up the headsail to sheet it down hard. It is amazing, some of the hands on the other yachts feel sorry for George and the Old Men, until they get into the heavier breezes and see how quick and smart old George steers the Marloo.

Hi there Eric,
Glad to here that most of your essential facalties are still functional, viz, breathing and seeing and typing etc. The main thing that you can still do is what the 80's men aboard the Marloo do, is to pass on their sailing and racing experience. That is why I sail aboard and enjoy sailing with these guys. They may not be able to do any of the heavy stuff but they can impart to us less exprienced sailors their years of knowledge. Just imagine listening to the skipper and tactician arguimng about where to tack and which side of the harbour to sail. Between the pair they have been racing on Sydney Harbour for over 140 years! They realy make the other skippers nervous because they have the ability to literally pull rabits out of their caps.
The results came through from last Wednesday's race and we were second on handicap. We had a handy lead of about 7 points and the nearest rival had to beat us in these last two races. He finished fifth on handicap which means that we have won the winter series in Division one at Ransa.
We start racing the Hagar next Sunday after postphoning last weekends race with sickness and boats not ready. It should be a good season.
Chris.

Yesterday afternoon Rod and I went out and bought the Hagar into Manly Boat Shed where their resident rigger, affectionately known as Weasel came aboard and did his stuff. That is he went up the rig like a rat up a rafter. He hack-sawed away the old U-bolt and replaced it with a larger gauged new one as well as removing most of the heavy shakels and placing a swiveling shakel to the u-bolt as well as a new Riley block.
He then guided the old kite halliard up through the mast and maze of blocks and holes. It was all over in a few minutes and he made it look like child's play. However while the Weasel is older than myself, but weighs about 60 kilos and has been going up masts and rigging them for about 40 years.

After work today I met with Rod at the BIAS Boating warehouse near Chattswood where we used our winnings from the last Nationals. We procured a new kite sheet and assorted bits for the boats.
We have yet to determine the length of the topping lift sheet which must also be the correct diameter to pass through it's clutch and mast blocks. We will be replacing the main halliard but with one of the new un-shrinkable ropes from the Candy Store in Brookvale. We have had a problem with the current spectra rope stretching and slipping in the clutch.
We will also be looking at up-grading the mainsail Cunningham blocking system which also slips and can only be adjusted when we are on a starboard tack.
There is a long list of up-grades, replacements and maintenance to do on the Hagar before she is ready for the thrills and spills of Lake Macquarie next year.

On Friday night I re-invented our work list with a view of improving our boat performance via a range of changes, modifications as well as upgrades. It is quite a long list which I will not bore you with.
And so on Saturday afternoon Pete and I met Rod at the Club and we bought the Hagar into the work berth alongside the Davis Marina.
I got to and shifted a pair of U-bolts which protrude in front of the mast base and has on occasion caught the jib sheets on the go-a bouts.
I also drilled out two holes in the rear of the boom for a new kite-pole hanger.
Pete got to and spliced the new kite sheet end to take a Whitchard snap shakel. We also removed the baby stay which is to be shortened so that it can be easily removed in light conditions and attached to the shrouds for easier and quicker tacking.
We then had to abandon our work and deliver our clubs tender to the Manly Boat Club slipway as an opportunity arose for her to be slipped for free.
The work will continue.
Chris.

Before racing on Friday night I picked up the new Baby Stay which Rod had organized and we Jerry-rigged it to the Hagar with Pete going up the mast to fix it there.
While it worked well it still needs some attention, especially to the plastic tube protection about the lower two meters. While we had a number of bad tacks due to the sheets jamming and initially blamed the baby stay, it was in fact due to the sheets twisting in the rear turning blocks. The blocks need to be hung with shock cord and the sheets need to be replaced as they are just too stiff.
Next Weekend will see us working on Hagar and fixing a lot of these little teething problems.
Chris.
