Sorry to hear that you are not well Eca. Hope that you are getting better and can get out onto your pond at Gosford. I have woken up here looking over the Manly district to a real pea-soup morning, you can cut the mist with an knife, and it is still warm outside. Chris. |

Today saw us racing in the North Harbour Regatta in a real Pea-Soup. A true sea fog which came and went and did not altogether clear until after we finished racing about 1.oopm. Stewart was helming the Dumeresque with his two kids, wife and a crew and reported being close to being run-down by a Manly Ferry which came out of the fog in Manly as we ran from under North Head towards Forty Baskets YA mark. After that we abandoned sailing across the Ferries course and sailed in the Reef Beach to Forty Baskets area. A good time was had by all and the Club was full of sailing and social memebers. We rearly have fog on the harhour and this is the first time which I have ever sailed in one. The visibility was at times very poor and you could not see the boats around you. Chris. |

Yeah we had similar conditions - only with out the ferries - just "floating brothels" going out for their one trip a year! Now I can write in here because we ie Annie, Sarah, my sisiter and Al took the "Sarah Ellen out to motor about the fleet - WE were thr BIG boat! how cool the commodore relaxed, dark n stormy in hand going about the fleet issueing instructions - all was well - we got over near the airport - cough, splutter, shutdown!!! oh no me thinks out of fuel, didn't we put a 100 litres in a while back Al? Yeah a long while back and we have done 30hours since then! 3 litres an hour! test the tank anf yep were out!!! So I got a handicap daughter on board - no prob Annie can watch her, Lyn my sister - knows nothing about boats, Al whom still thinks its only a big windsurfer - how hard can it be! so out with the headsail drag it up, hank on all the palarva that goes with getting ready for sail - I notice that the wind has increased from a sedate 5knts to a howling 8knts - this is going to test the "cool helmsman" I find myself thinking in the now baking sun with sweat dripping off! hows 8knts going to get a 14ton bahemouth even to move? Then the starter and a couple of other boats came within earshot "you guys ok" before I could take control of my motely mob they are spilling it all - we are out of fuel, the wire mizzin halyard(whatever that is) is stuck - the skipper is hot and bothered and we just drank his last rum!!! well laugh - the goddam committee boat went into histerics as did those close bye! "Hey Col when the fleet is finished we will give you tow huh? or we will send dads navy or the cops out to get you hahahahahahahaha" as they motored off! Now I could not swear as my mouth would have filled with sweat so I soldered on with the rig! finally everything up including the mizzen - bloody wire halyards - give me the simple endeavour any day. So still in the howling 8knt NE we stated to move - Al, jeeze Conz we must be doing .5 of a knot - yeah Al run out tide and 14tons of barge with little wind, we gunna be out here for a while! yeah but on a windsurfer "shutup about the bloody windsurfer for gods sake and pull the main on a bit - how do you do that? arghhhhhhh. Then the breese did lift to about 12 maybe 14 knots (remember this is the first time we have had all sail up) broad reaching and she started to get in the spirit - I'm now sailing properly and starting to think" this big bastard does not sail too bad for a cruiser - maybe Hearnie can get me a better heady and a Sydney 38 main etc! Al again - we gunna get a tow when we get to the mooring? I think, ok our mooring is out the front of the club, all the clubbies will be watching _ i know every tom dick and harry will be anchored in tiny Kogarah Bay waiting for fireworks later and that space will be limited! "Nah bugger that we will sail on she'll be right" al you gotta do is drop the headsail halyard, tighten the topping lift on the main and release the halyard when I tell you then grab the mooring bouy! Al - what bloody lanuage you speakin?" argh this is going to be fun!!!Anyway as we were working up the bay we had the old girl pointing well and going like a dream - so I sailed he across the finish line just so the clubbies could see a real boat, gybed, issued instructions frantically - and executed a seamanship display of picking our way through boats (some of whom thought they were about to be obliterated)and landing the bouy! Now pack the goddamm thing up and lets get ashore I need a dozen Dark n Stormy's. :) |

Glad that you enjoyed your Australia Day out Col. It happens to eveyone dontuknow? I've run the engine with out the water inlet cock open and burnt out the impeller. At the Nats Rod sailed down and never checked the oil. Andy and I got on board and found there was none. About two years ago we had to fight with Rod to keep spare coolant and oil on board as they were "heavy". On the Friday we topped her up before the first race as well as topping up the coolant. The problem with the 10 HP diesel in the Hagar is that it uses very little fuel and has a 60 litre tank which we might use in a year. Andy and I try and replace the oil once or twice a year as well as replacing both sets of Oil & Fuel filters. Happy cruising. Chris. |

| We all have our 'funny' stories, like when on Ken Dicksons suggestion we set out to bring 4 Seasons down from Toronto at night,,, a loveley trip, until we lost our prop.off Terrigal at 3 A M in glassy water .we were looking forward to having breakfast at L H I when a 20knot southerly came through and we found ourselves sailing a strange boat in total darkness and water that was somewhat less than smooth, the 3rd crew man went below an d had a sleep,we reached Broken Bay just after sunrise and he comes up ,has a big stretch and says 'that was a good sail, wasn't it!!! If you think that was exciting it didnt match being towed in by a very enthusiastic team from Dads Army in their jet boat.....not an experience to be taken lightly ,if i ever need them again i think i'll ask for a slower rescue craft ...The 'very' ancient mariner... |

We sailed four-up last night in the Manly YC twilighter. We rigged the number two jib which looked to be the correct decision, however the breeze slowly died and developed some big holes and at times we strugled for power. We finined somewhere mid-fleet in a large bunch of yachts. It was overcast and much cooler as the night progressed. There is no race at North Harbour this weekend. Chris. |

Well following last Friday nights dissapointing result, tonight we finished second across the line after loosing a single minute off the handicap. We sailed well but again the breeze did a number on us and we should have been in the big jib, making the same error of using the new number two. We were underpowered and again had speed though the water but could not point as high compared to the boats around us. Next week we will be back with the big boats having sustained a six or eight minute penalty. Tomorrow I have to install the new double cluth for the Boom Vang and the kite halliard. Sunday sees us racing again at North Harbour around the Sydney Cans. Chris. |

Saturday's weather conditions were poitively diabolical with the heat keeping me at home. Sunday was a bit improved and we started our race at North Harbour in a light North Easterly and quickly reeled in the fleet after a handicap start. However we got lost in the sound and left becalmed until a south westerly saft od wind picked us up and we chased the fleet up into Middle Harbour and down the harbour and caught them again at the easterl channel YA mark. The wind again changed and we found ourselves caught between a North Easterly and a South westerly. We were parked and watched half the fleet retire and the leader dissappear. The light breeze finally came in and we sailed into Rose Bay and after rounding the mark were hit by the long awaited Southerly change. It was relieving and we shot around Shark Island in out big rig and took off down the harbour under main and jib. We jybed and poled out the jib and were surfing along between 6.5 to 8.5 knots. The swell and wind continued to build and we crossed the finish line behaind the Kargi, a 24 foot triton. After finishing and back on the mooring the breeze built up to about 30 knots. A good finish, Chris. |

Well today's weather forcast looks very bad and 6 knots maximum in North Harbour will see us lucky to finish.
Friday nights twilighter was quite surprisizing with a light south easterly and with the Manly YC club nominating their dangerous number 5 course which sees the fleet crossing itself in enclosed waters three times just before the finish. We do not normally do well in these conditions, however on Friday with all the tacking and jybing and a lot of tactics required we surprised ourselves coming about seventh across the line and finishing very fast. We demolished all of the larger yaachts which we started with and the 33 footer which we use as our bench mark and just about always beats us in the light was a long way back in the fleet. It was only the light weight small flyers which we could not catch at the finish which beat us. The crew worked really hard and we were pleased with our result. Chris. |

By contrast! I,ve been away to my mates place in Paynesville this past week,on tuesday evening I was asked to go for a twilight sail - on a Ross 780 extended to a 860! (mighty long tiller)it was a 25knot easterly (how long since we had one of those in Sydney) anyway we were the limit boat having given the other new proper Ross 860 3 mins start (he is also the handicapper and I'm lead to beleive the CB) a 2k work - no spray on deck - plenty of being overpowered! then a 6 - 7 k blast reach - talk about fun, a thoughtfull work to the finish saw us beat the CB buy 3 mins - this made the skipper very happy, it was fun and reminded me that one should try something other than an Endeavour every now and again. |

Well Sunday's race at North Harbour was, as forcast, a horror breeze which was mainly in the south east to east, but got very tricky. We were the limit boat but caught and past the fleet in the sound on the second leg. We were looking good coming out of Middle Harbour having successfully gybed the single luff kite and carried it back to the Bombora on a reverse course until we squared away and then dropped it and hoisted the old big double luff kite. At this time we got entangled with the big fleet from Ransa who were holding their annual Regatta. As we rounded the bottom mark we tacked away from underneath a Flying Tiger 30 footer and went to the wrong side of the course. Unfortunatly Dumersq did not make the same mistake and took the eastern side and came out a few hundred meteres to windward of us. We caught them but could not manage to pass them and they got the gust of the day and skipped away, and even past all the Division two boats on the line leaving the Hagar to come motherless last,...dontweknow! Chris. |

Coley, you have been at those Dark and Stormies again, dontweknow!?
Today Ian has his annual Dentist's big day out on the water and hopefully the Hagar will not sustain too much damage. She still sports the marks along the after side of the upper hull from last year. Chris. |

Well we found the Hagar not too worse for ware conditions from the Dentists. They are a wild mob, dontyouknow? The boat continues to be attacked by sea-gulls and our boat is getting off lightly compared to many in the local bay. There are literally hundreds of the flying pooping rodents which have moved into our bay. We should send browneye bob the clean-up bill. After cleaning off the poop and rigging up we sallied forth and competed reasonably well in the Manly YC twilighter last night finishing mid-fleet somewhere. We passed more boats than those which passed us, which was about two. We managed to keep most of the biggies behind us last night. There is no race at North Harbour this weekend. Chris.

The weekend saw us not racing on Friday night due to work comitments by both Rod & myself. Sunday's race was the annual Ladies Day Race which involved a marathon from Manly to Spectacle Island at Drummoyne and return. During this race we had to negotiate a large number of racing fleets involved in the Audi Regatta. We experimented further with the newly aquired single luff kite. It was OK when running at the right angles but cost us hugely on the square run from Rose Bay to Spectakle Isl. We eventually came home with the fastest time but without a lady aboard the trophy goes to the Cavalier.
Intersting results for anyone interested in the Audi Regatta which saw Dumersq and Clewless racing in Division 5. Dumersque finished third and Clewless were fifth overall on handicap. It appeared that after winning the first heat Dumersq were heavily handicapped. See the full details at:
http://www.topyacht.net.au/results/2011/ashr/series/course-g/SGrp26.htm
A good result to our guys nonetheless. Chris. |

Well there is nothing to report on the Hagar and North Harbour scene over the past two weeks. It has been very quiet and we did not sail last week due to other commitments and bad weather. We did however do a smart deal in replacing the old North Harbour Club tender which we have had for about thirty five years. It was a Deltacraft DB and we would have to have purchased her for the Club back in 1975 when I first found myself in the Chair of the Club. It has been a great boat and has had about three motors. We ended up giving her away just to be rid of her quickly, and hay! she owed us nothing. For $3,000 we upgraded to a later model which is in very good condition and should be up and running this weekend. The beauty of the deal is that there are six club members who have pitched in $500.00 each to take custodianship of her and will maintain and run her at the Clubs expense. Instant starter crew, dontweknow! Chris. |
