Hi Guys, well coming up is going to be a great Weekend. The "Splinterer's" & "Splinterette's" will be competing in the Port Hacking to Port Jackson, finish under the eastern side of the Harbour Bridge. Stay at the CYC Saturday night and we will behave I hope. Then Sunday we start off the Dolphins near Shark Island at 10.30 race up the Harbour and return to Port Hacking. So far the weather forecast is great for the smaller boats like us. Sat - N/NE 10 - 15, so #1 and the big boats cannot get away. Sunday, well forcast S/SE 15/20, love it #2 and will still be able to see the boats coming around Cape Bailey. This again could be a back markers race. So I am looking forward to a great weekend for the little Endeavour. I have a great crew for the weekend 6 on the way up and 5 down. Will post results on Sunday night and hope for a good results. I must admit, this could be one of the best weekends of the season if the forecast holds true. This will be the first race for our new Crew shirts included new insigna for the '30's. The shirts look great and showed Reg our shirt today and he agreed they are appealing. He made some suggestions which I will work on and report later. Will also post photos next week of the crew shirts with the insigna. So all Endeavourer's let get out there this weekend and kick "A" cheers, |

This evenings twilight race with the Manly Yacht Club saw a very strong 18 plus knot north easterly. We motored out & only just made it to the start line and might have been slightly late. There were only three of us on board. We were rigged with full main & number three header. Now the number 3 is the oldest & is in the worst condition of all of our sails. Although we thought it was OK it was apparent from its performance that it is largely blown out. We went well downwind but were overpowered in the gusts with the top of the sail very baggy. We could have used Sasha on the rail tonight! So we may be getting a new number 3 header first. We finished well back in the field tonight and were eaten up in the last few hundred metres by a lot of the backmarkers. Chris. |

Last weekend on "Splinter" was a very mixed weekend of racing. 2 races - Saturday Port Hacking to finish under the Harbour Bridge, Sunday Rushcutters Bay to Port Hacking. Saturday mornings start turned out to be absolute mayhem. The crash & bang with the '26 at the Anniversay turned out to be childs play (no pun Rod). The wind was very light about 2 knots just to keep you moving so we lined up at the start, we had a great position 1 min before the gun then to wind died - nothing about 20 all just drifted into each other with no where to go and no steerage well thed boats we the smallest through to a 57 Adams. After 30 mins we made it back to the start line to see some of the bigger boats half way across Bate Bay in very light airs. Would have loved to had a camera. No protest were lodged but a lot of laughter later at the finish, I think during the mayhem we did 2 360's by being pushed be other boats. All in all a very enjoyable weekend, with a fleet of 34 boats at CYC overnight we had a ball I think. Results 12th on the way up and 14th on the way home, and still leases us in 11th in the series. We have done some damage to our back stay anchor point over the weekend and will report on it later as think all '30 check it out. cheers, |

This evening the twilighter at Manly YC was a drifter from start to finish with only a few puffs. We went off in the frount third of the fleet only to be run doun by the bigger backmarker yachts by the bottom mark. We then found ourselves at the back of the fleet. We then clawed our way back up the fleet passing a large numbers of yachts and eventually finishing a third to mid fleet. However the time limit must have expired as it was dark & the finisher could not see or distinuish most of the yachts. The boat goes reasonably well in the light. Apart from this it was a most frustrating evening. Sundays race has been postponed due to sickness in the other yacht. Tomorrow will be a work day on the yacht & Sunday will be cruising. Chris. |

Hi all, what a great Day, didn't sail Splinter, but had a phone call yesterday from a mate who had entered his yacht in the two handed series. He race the 1st race and came last. so he had 8 points and I just said to him that if the boat didn't run he could kiss the series good bye. So never steered his boat before ( a Durfour '35, magnificate caravan on water) so I would suffer through. So got his best crew, Brad young bloke about 40 and when preparing the boat I said do you want to kick ass. Answer yes. Well gave it a shot. Brought out everything I know and some. Brad worked his ass off while I steered and worked some cluthes. We did the Course 23 Yellow Mark off the runway in Botany Bay, 17 nm, wind got up to 20 knots. Just great. Result. We Won - 1st on Handicap by 8 and 1/2 minutes. What a great day. Lovely boat but I couldn't afford the freight. 280K - the owner is pissed off because we stuffed up his handicap. And he wosn't there. (He was at a seminar about Professional insurance) We didn't even think about his Insurance, we just screw the ass off his boat and got him a win. Wonderful Day. cheers, |

Plan one was to take Miles out on his first zodiac (Bombard, actually) ride around the marina. The weather pattern over Melbourne suggests that there will be as much water falling into the boat form above as there will be being kept out by the hull...So this may be postponed.
Save me some squid!

Sasha, the way it looks here now it could be the same. I love that Blue/Grey look in the clouds. I'm just going to the Chinese up the road and just let it pore. God help the guys up at Audley now, I know of two boats. I think they will a wet ass. |

Well last night saw a depleted racing fleet at the Manly YC Twilighter race. The threatening weather conditions kept a lot away. There were about 20 yachts which was about ten down on previous weeks. We sailed in a 12 to 15 knot northeasterly in flat water. There was weather threatening to break on all quarters. A big thunderhead was in the northeast and from the northwest to the south & mainly in the west the sky was a nice black green colour which was steadily advancing towards us. We had four on board and sailed fairly well. Rod was off at the army and Murray was on the helm. It was the closest race so far. We tacts to clear our air once and lost about four places. We were taken out on the line by two of the big boats & finished about tenth. I worked the jib sheets & trimmed. The number three header was the correct choice, but she is very much blown out & hooks badly in the trailing edge & is baggy in the middle & top of the sail. We finished & immediately went to the engine & dropped the sails to motor back in short time to the mooring. We packed the Hagar up in record time & were the first boat back at the marina. We were just enjoying our first drink when the storm broke over us at North Harbour. There was a great light & sound show with heavy rain but no hail. A great way to finish the working week. Chris. |

Hi all, what a fantastic weekend. The weather in Sydney was supurb. We went up to Audley in the Royal National Park in the company of 15 other yachts. The tide was high and plenty of water under us. The shollowest I saw was 2.7 which was amazing because the last time was 2.2 and we draw 1.7 Great weekend cruising, motored only and this is what boating is all about. check out the photos on our web site.

This Friday nights twilight race at Manly saw a light ENE sea breeze. One of the Partners, Ian turned up with a crew of five people he bought along from a christmas party. So the Hagar had a crew of ten bodies. Now I know what Colin means when he descibed the E30 as a "party boat". Old Pete wnrt down below and pasted up beers to us. We were very much affected downwind, but were OK on the breeze with all the balast. It was a shame it did not come in at twenty something knots. We could have stacked the rails with bodies & carried full gear! We ended up in the second part of the fleet however, which was dissapointing because we have been going well in the light stuff. Ian is out cruising tomorrow & we are racing on Sunday at North Harbour. Chris. |

Chris, I think when you get the big crews like your last Friday night you know you have a great friends. We get that regularly and it does nothing for our pointscore in Twilights but we have great fun. Could post photos of standing room only for the Christmas run. We finally managed to come last. It's just weight but it is great fun. Has anybody been watching the fun and games in Cronulla to-day. The Helicopers are all overhead and Police cars everywhere. Just had 6 Police car in our street with some kids up the street. Apparently thought they had weapons. What is the world coming too !! I know the locals have had enough, I have just had enough of their bad language. I hate the swearing regularly in front of our girls and us. They just have no respect for anybody. I think Col will have a big job to-morrow at the Mall. Just not to be there this afternoon. cheers, |

Hi all, our home computer blew up last night & the son raced out to buy a new power supply, so we are back on line in short time. My second daughter announced that she was off to Cronulla beach this Sunday to watch the lebs get beaten. Yes you do wonder, the looney left pollies & inteligencia might think they have us us under control, but enough is enough! Meanwhile todays sailing was a disaster, with Rod late and most likely still under the weather from last night. We just made the start and sailed to the wrong mark first mark. Buy the the time we had finsihed working out the correct course we were almost a leg behind. Then we hesitated about hoisting the kite and could only run square to the finish line a sorry last. **** happens! We did however have all the sheets sorted out with the correct lenghts for the jib as well as a double brace & sheet set-up for the kite. Chris. |

This Friday night sees the sixth heat of the Manly YC Twilighter Series. We have been working hard on the Hagar IVs' handicap and after last Fridays dismal performance we had three minutes knocked off it. Soooo, if we have the normal crew and not all of the ballast like last Friday night, we should do well. Looking forward to a good race. The Fleet is up to 39 yachts now. There are no more North Harbour races until the New Year, and , speaking of which, we will be on the harbour for the New Years fire works on the 31st-1st. All the Owners & families will be aboard so if you intend to be out there let us know & we can possible raft-up & party together.[:-party] Chris. |

With a patchy noreasterly we got the Hagar off to a good downwind start and sailed a different upwind course than most boats, doing a number on the leaders and finished second across the line. The one boat in frount was about 100 metres away. The boat had fair speed but still lacks pointing ability. A satisfying result with hopefully more to come. Chris. |

| Chris, What system do you have for backstay adjustment? I got a lot more height with a 32:1 system (4:1 plus three doublers) |

Leigh, I think the back stay is a twenty two to one ratio , and it appears to be adequate. We could double the baby stay which is currently only six to one. Will be looking at running it back to the cockpit in the future when we upgrade our clutch systems. Last night when we were on the wind and coming up the harbour we were reading 5.0 to 5.1 knots and after Rod pulled on the backstay & then the baby stay the boat increased from 5.2 to 5.4 knots and was sailing freer. Following discussions with Rod & Old Pete, the problem with our lack of pointing ability is most likely related to the poor sail shape of the mainsail. It is overly full in the lower half and tends to hook up at the leach. To get any proper shape into it we have to try and flatten it out as much as possible. This requires lots of backstay as well as baby stay tension. Rod is of the opinion that this should not be necessary if the sail shape was cut correctly and that as the breeze increases the main should flatten out with just minor adjustments and not become the big bag which it is. In addition all of the headsails are old. We dont' really know how old, but most likely well over ten years. They are all made of heavy dacron. Chris. |
