Hello all,
I've just purchased my first yacht. A Turquoise endeavour 24, Hull number 1099. It's currently at Ettalong but will make Gwandalan on Lake Macquarie it's permanent home in the next couple of months. First a bit of essential maintenance to reach Swansea safely and that's where my questions start. The rudder post has been changed by the previous owner to stainless variety already so tick that box. Next I am getting the 5HP Yamaha that came with the yacht serviced and will be taking another 3HP as emergency backup but don't know if that will provide enough power. I should find out on one of the shake down sails planned before the move. I also plan to replace the sail slides which are currently attached with purpose made leather straps, is this a sign of age of the sails? What I need opinions on is the standing rigging. It all looks a bit odd. There are 3 side stays each side, 2 that attach at spreader level and 1 top of the mast. 2 backstays of which one has porcelain fittings near bottom and top, I assume it was used as an antenna. One forestay, NO baby stay although there is an eye just aft of the forward hatch and an attachment point at spreader height. I plan to gradually replace the rigging but would prefer to do it when I reach the lake. I should be able to do some of the installing myself which shouldn't be too difficult as there are STEPS all the way up the mast. Making me think maybe it's not the original. And that bracket on the back does that look like a steering vane setup? Below is the link to the photos

Also if anybody recognises her, any history would be appreciated.
Thanks, Onno van den Berg E24 Switch (new name does not currently have a name)

| Well done Onno. Welcome to the world of E24 sailing. Maximum fun with minimal expense. My E24 Tarni 2 is my first yacht and I have never looked back. The great thing about endeavours are you can experiment with rig, fittings and just about anything without compromising safety or fun. I use a 5hp outboard and find it enough power to get you out of any problem. Good idea to start replacing old fittings including those ancient bakelite 'porcelain' bits. My 24 has a baby stay, single backstay splitting to two so I can adjust it and make it easier to get onboard at the stern. I have 2 stays each side which is a usual set up. Have fun getting your endeavour renewed and modernised. The yachts are a true testament to Reg Gardner's design and workmanship. I'm sure they'll be digging an Endeavour yacht up in 1000 years and still be sailing them! |

I purchased an E24 last Dec. I'm still working on her. At the moment I'm freeing up the cap shroud turn buckles as the rig needs more tension for serious sailing. You definitely need the baby stay and should probably replace all the standing rigging. I think insurance could be an issue if you lose the mast and the rigging is more than 7 years old. Regarding the engine Penguin came with a 2hp Honda that pushes the boat around easily in moderate weather. She also came with a brand new 5 hp 4 stroke that is just to heavy to lift in and out of the cabin and it won't fit in the rear locker. |
