Hi Guy's ,

New to this forum and seeking advice on what would be the best sailing boat for my young family to enjoy the Hawkesbury and Sydney region . Currently I live in Broken Hill NSW , though I will be returning to Sydney within the next couple of years . Having a world of experience with waterskiing and driving for skiers at Wisemans Ferry , I am comfortable around boats though new to sailing . There are a few boats that I have in Mind , including the following : E26-7 , Top Hat Mk3 , Triton 24 . Given my children will be aged 11 , 8 , 7 at the time , I am trying to ascertain the most appropriate for a family . Being 6'2 tall , headroom may also be a consideration .....

Advice would be most appreciated ,

Brad Geyer

The Endeavour 27 has the headroom + cruising and racing ability.
There is one for sale at Lake Macquarie that would be ideal.

G,day Brad ,I know where your comming from ,I have been down this path many times .
Getting a boat to fit is important when your over 6ft and you want to use it for the family .
I now have a 28ft Endeavour and it suits my partner and I just fine its bigger inside than some 30ft ers with a finn keel a good turn of speed and sea kindlyness to boot .
Top Hats are great boats but a bit slow and putting all the family on one might be just a bit too close for an extended stay but the biggest problem for a 6ft er is getting in and out of the cabin , they have a teardrop type enterance and not a sliding hatch which makes it a pain for some one our size .
The Compass 28 is a nice boat that would have a bit more room for your crew but again it has a teardrop enterance , i have friends with these type of boats and i find it quite difficulte when im on there boats . The early model Compass called a Northener came out with a sliding hatch which is a lot easyer to use. I would suggest that a nice 28 or 30 ft Endeavour would be hard to beat ,but like all good things they are hard to find and when you do, you have to maintain them.
Whatever you buy make sure that you have the motor checked out properly and that it big enough to push you through rough stuff if needed and that you have good access to i.The 30 has the motor in the middle and the 28 under the v berth , its much easyer to work on than being squeezed in under a cockpit in a narrow gutted boat. There are many other things you will have to decide on but i do suggest not to go to small and dont go to big 28 to 30 should be just right. cheers taunto.

Hi there Brad,
Cannot say enough about the big Endeavour yachts. There are the 27's, 28's & 30's as well as the rare E32's. They are all well built bullet proof small yachts. With the exception of a few E27's most have inboard diesel engines. There are a few E27's with a cockpit well which takes an outboard petrol motor which is intalled when motoring and spends the rest of it's life in a rear locker.
I'm an unrepentant E30 fanatic. We maily race our boat, the Hagar and will be doing Cat 4 offshore racing this year. Not fast, but solid, safe and reliable.
Another major plus in the purchase of an Australian Endeavour yacht is the people and organisation behind the boats. We recently attended a meeting of other classes of the same vintage. The others were blown away by our web-site, organisation of annual National and State regattas. There are racing fleets of Endeavours in NSW, in several clubs, Victoria and a big fleet of E24's in Perth.
They are also very good value for your money and with the current recession which some pollies deny, have fallen in price in the past two years. If you wish to inspect an E30 you can contact me on;

Hi Gentlemen ,

Thanks for the advice , it has been a while since you guys replied though , for which I apoligise . Currently ( 20/10/12) I have noticed an Endeavour 27 on boatpoint.com at a reasonable 10k , it's just a shame that I am renovating my home here in Broken Hill NSW which I'm keeping as a rental , before moving back to Sydney . Would love to catch up with an Endeavour 27-30 owner next time in Sydney to gain a closer appreciation of the mark and it's suitability for my young family ...

So iid like to take you up on that opportunity Chris , when Im next in Sydney , so I'll ring you beforehand ...

Much Appreciation ,
